Mules Roll Past Terriers 6-1

WATERVILLE, ME – The Colby Mules scored four second half goals to power past the Thomas College field hockey team, 6-1, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night.

In the loss, the Terriers drop to .500 on the season with a 2-2 record while the Mules move to 1-0 in their season opener. Merrill Read (Milwaukee, WI) and McKayla Blanch (Tewksbury, MA) each scored two goals in the victory for Colby.

In the 10th minute of the first half, the Mules got on the board with an unassisted goal by Read.  Four minutes later, Colby would add another from Blanch to give her team a 2-0 lead going into the half.

After the break, Caroline Ferguson (Weston, MA) netted her first goal of the season to increase the lead. The Terriers looked to spark a rally in the 48th minute when senior forward Gabby Martell (Gorham, ME / Gorham) fired home a one-time pass from Tiffany Weeks (Kennebunk, ME / Kennebunk) for her fifth goal of the season and a 3-1 game.

Meredith Keenan (Sherman, CT) put the Mules back up by three goals less than four minutes later when she rammed in a shot off a cross that had been pushed away by Charrier.

Read scored her second of the day off a penalty corner from Hannah Hearn (Auburn, ME). Read took the quick pass from Hearn and her score made it 5-1. Blanch closed out the scoring with 5:11 to play.

Senior Abbie Charrier (Waldo, ME / Mt. View) was given the loss and made 15 saves in goal for the Terriers while Riley Whitmyer (Chagrin Falls, OH) turned aside two shots for the Mules.

The Mules outshot the Terriers by a large 34-3 margin and held a 6-2 advantage in corners.

The Terriers will be on the road this weekend as they play Saturday, September 10, at noon in a non-conference game at Simmons.
