BOSTON, MA – Thomas field hockey team (3-8, 0-1 NAC) was unable to generate a score for the thrid straight game and fell to Simmons College 3-0 this afternoon at Winsor Field in a noncoference contest.
Julie Saltamartini scored a pair of goals and goaltender Brianna Rastello stopped all four shots she faced for the Sharks, who have won four of their last five and improve to 5-4 on the season.
Thomas goalkeepers Brittany Fox and Abbie Charrier combined for six saves in defeat. The loss is the third in a row for Thomas.
Saltamartini put Simmons on the board early in the first half when Mary Neidhardt put a cross on her stick in the right slot for a goal at 7:27 to provide the home team with a 1-0 edge.
Kelly Ryan padded the Sharks' lead, just under 12 minutes later, when she blasted a shot from just inside the left side of the circle past the diving Thomas netminder and into the right corner at 19:02 for a 2-0 lead.
Simmons capped the scoring just 3:32 into the second half when Kelly Williamson carried the ball down the field and found Saltamartini for a one-timer that resulted in her team-high sixth goal of the year and a 3-0 cushion for the Sharks at 38:32.
Rastello earned the victory for Simmons with her fourth shutout of the season and fifth of her career, while sophomore goalie Abbie Charrier stopped two of the four shots she faced in the opening 19:18 of play for the Terriers, before junior goalie Brittany Fox closed out the final 50:42 by turning away four of five shots.
Thomas returns to the field next to take on North Atlantic Conference foe New England College on Saturday, October 4. Gametime is scheduled for 5pm.
