Waterville, Maine - The Thomas College field hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime against North Atlantic Conference foe Castleton State College in a North Atlantic Conference match-up Sunday afternoon. Senior Ali Kriegel led the Terriers offense with two goals. On the defensive end sophomore goal keeper Sofia Sourgiadakis recorded 20 saves.
Kriegel put the Terriers (5-10, 3-5 NAC) on the board first when she finished a penalty corner taken by fellow senior Brittany Moore at the 29:10 mark.
Although the Spartans (8-7, 6-0 NAC) outshot the Terriers 13-to-8 the Terriers held a 1-0 lead at the half.
Kriegel added to the Terriers lead when she scored off of a pass from senior Kristin Masessa at the 42:44 mark.
Blake Wardwell put the Spartans on the board twelve minutes later when she finished a pass from Rachel Preusser. The Spartans tied the game at the 60:27 mark when Preusser scored off of a pass from Kealy Chipman.
With time dwindling away in the second half the Sourgiadakis and the Terriers defense was able to fend off four Castleton penalty corners and four shots Castleton shots. Sophomore Lauren Hachey made a clutch defensive save on the Spartans final shot of regulation to keep the game tied and force overtime.
Two minutes into overtime Brynn Cayia passed to Preusser who tallied for the game winning goal for the Spartans.
Sourgiadakis shoulders the loss for the Terriers, while Bridget Dusha who recorded six saves for the Spartans earns the win.
The Terriers take the field on October 19th against NAC rival the Beavers of the University of Maine at Farmington at home at 3:30 p.m. The Spartans travel to the Sharks of Simmons College on October 19 for a 7 p.m. NAC match up.
