Springfield, Mass. – The Thomas College ice hockey team defeated No. 9 Springfield College 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Smead Arena.
The Terriers took an early lead when Justin Wentworth (China, Maine) beat the goaltender late in the first period. Thomas fought to hold their lead and the period concluded 1-0.
Jaymen Swygert (Summerville, S.C.) and Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) extended the Terrier's lead to 3-0 in the second period. Miloslav Fuksa (Czech Republic) made a variety of athletic saves to ice the Pride for two consecutive periods. Thomas held a 3-0 lead over Springfield going into the second intermission.
Thomas jumped to a 4-0 lead in the third period, when Hunter Hughes (Lewiston, Maine) buried a pass from Cameron Bigelow (West Gardiner, Maine). The Pride responded with a goal that cut the Terrier's lead to 4-1. Thomas maintained their lead for the remaining minutes of the third period making it a 4-1 final.
Fuksa had a stellar performance between the pipes and earned the win.
Thomas will play Bates College next on Wednesday, January 29 for a 6:30 PM game at Underhill Arena in Lewiston, Maine.
