Bolton, Conn. – The Thomas College Ice Hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut 7-5 on Saturday evening at the Bolton Ice Palace.
The Terriers had a few scoring chances late in the first period, but they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Tom Green (Biddeford, Maine) made a couple key saves before the first intermission and the period concluded 0-0.
Connecticut jumped to a 2-0 lead early in the second period, but Thomas responded with goals from Jaymen Swygert (Summerville, S.C.) and Justin Wentworth (China, Maine) before the second intermission to tie the game 2-2.
The Huskies went ahead 4-2 in the early minutes of the third period and established a two-goal lead for the second time. At the midway mark Wentworth scored his second goal of the game and Matthew Deveaux (Brunswick, Maine) tied the game again at 4-4. William Heywood (Yarmouth, Maine) added another goal to give Thomas their first lead of the game at 5-4. Connecticut ended the Terriers three-goal surge and tied the game for a third time at 5-5, but Wentworth netted his third goal of the game to secure a win for Thomas at 6-5. The Huskies desperately peppered Green with shots in the final minutes, and Green was credited with a goal on a redirected shot that found Connecticut's empty net making it a 7-5 final.
Green played an outstanding game in goal and earned the win.
Thomas will play Springfield College on Sunday, January 26 for a 1:30 PM game at Smead Arena in Springfield, Mass.
