SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Thomas College ice hockey team fell to Springfield College 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
The Pride jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first to hold a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Springfield added another early in the second to take command at 3-0. The Terriers cut into the lead when Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) scored off a feed from Zach Gagne (Augusta, Maine), but the Pride answered back to bring their lead back to three and head into the third up 4-1.
The Terriers came out blazing in the third, scoring three times in five minutes to tie the game at 4-4. Benjamin MacLennan (Portland, Maine) got it going 16 seconds into the period off a dish from Gagne. Kappleman netted his second less than two minutes later with an assist by Justin Wentworth (China, Maine). Wentworth notched the equalizer with 15 to go in the period with Alex Berard (Winslow, Maine) and Kappleman assisting. The Terriers had opportunities to take the lead, but the Pride would be the ones to convert with 2:11 to go and took the 5-4 victory.
Tom Green (Biddeford, Maine) took the loss in net following a 33 save performance.
Thomas will return to action following the winter break when they visit Bates on Friday, January 11 at 7:00 PM.
