AUGUSTA, ME – The Thomas College club hockey team allowed three third period goals in a 6-4 loss to the University of New England club team in a Northeast Collegiate Hockey Association matchup on Friday evening at the Camden National Bank Ice Vault.
In the loss, the Terriers fall to 4-6 on the season while the Nor'easters move to 5-3 and remain in the top spot of the Colonial North Conference standings.
Thomas opened the scoring early in the first period at the 3:32 mark as Bryce Lamontagne sent Jason Dicey in all alone on Nor'easter goalie AJ Gugliara. Dicey's backhand shot found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Just under three minutes later UNE responded with the equalizer as Tommy Dzis notched the game up at 1-1.
Later in the first period, Christo Naranja put the Terriers back on top as he slammed in a rebound from Dicey's initial shot. Just before the break the Nor'easters tied the game up once again as Dylan Porier tallied his first of the game.
UNE took their first lead of the game at 4:13 of the second period as Drew Sommerhof beat Terrier goalie Tom Green for a 3-2 advantage. Thomas eventually regained the lead before the end of the period on two-straight goals for a 4-3 margin going into the final frame. Colby Blondin tied the game up as his point shot on the power play found the back of the net. Four minutes after, Alex Berard rang a shot off the post and in to give his team the lead.
The third period was all Nor'easters as they scored three-straight goals from Nathan Potvin, Brogan Hurst, and Porier's second to secure the 6-4 victory.
Green was given the loss in goal, allowing five goals on 24 shots and was relieved by Michael Small who allowed a goal on eight shots. Gugliara was the winning goalie for UNE as he turned aside 41 shots. Thomas outshot UNE 45-32.
The Terriers will have their senior night as they host Saint Joseph's on Saturday, February 4 in an 8:00 p.m. contest.
