ORONO, ME – The Thomas College club ice hockey team could not overcome a large first period deficit in an 8-6 loss to the University of Maine club team on Thursday night in an American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) game at the Alfond Arena.
In the loss, the Terriers drop to 3-5 (3-1 NECHA) on the season while the Black Bears improve to 6-7 overall. Senior Jason Dicey led the Thomas offense with three goals and two assists for five points.
Maine struck first at 16:54 of the opening period on a goal from Peter Lajeunesse for an early 1-0 lead. Thomas responded on the power play at 12:23 when Alex Lawson slammed in a rebound from Dylan Fernandez.
The Black Bears' offense took over in the last half of the first period as they erupted for four-straight goals from Ryan Downie, Cam Loiselle, Justin Portillo, and Jake Gross, giving them a 5-1 advantage at the break.
Dicey looked to spark the Terriers in the second period netting an unassisted goal at the 11:44 mark. Just over a minute later, the Black Bears answered back with a goal from Alex Fallon for a 6-2 lead after two periods.
Thomas came within three at 12:20 of the third as Dicey recorded his second of the game on an assist from Alex Berard. Downie put Maine back up 7-3 less than 30 seconds later, putting the game just out of reach. Thomas finished the period with three more goals from Dicey, Berard, and Tim McDermott while Fallon added his second for the Black Bears to finish the scoring at 8-6.
Freshman Tom Green was given the loss in goal for Thomas and was relieved after the first period by Michael Small. Grant Carrier earned the victory between the pipes for the Black Bears. Maine outshot Thomas 62-40.
The Terriers will travel to Proctor Academy on Sunday, January 29 to face Colby-Sawyer in a NECHA Colonial Conference matchup at 8:15 p.m.
