WINSLOW, ME – The Thomas College ice hockey team was defeated by the University of Maine 11-7 in an American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) contest Thursday night at Sukee Arena.
The Black Bears quickly opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the first period when Conor Tulley beat Terrier goalie Michael Small to give them an early lead. Thomas answered right back at the 1:26 mark when Hersom found Dicey open in the slot, scoring his first on a wrist shot that beat Black Bear goaltender Grant Carrier.
The Terriers took a 2-1 lead on the power play at 2:37 when Alex Nadeau redirected Morin's shot from the top of the point. The Black Bears responded less than two minutes later when Dallas Clark brought the game back to a 2-2 tie. Dicey netted his second at the 9:01 mark when he stole the puck from the Black Bear defense and scored on a breakaway to lift the Terriers to a 3-2 lead. With 3:52 left in the first, Ethan Melvin lifted a backhand shot past Small to once again tie the game at 3-3. Just 30 seconds later, Morin sent a pass to Dicey in front of the net and he scored to give himself a hat trick while the Terriers ended the first with a 4-3 lead.
The Terriers added to their lead just 14 seconds into the second period when Hersom scored his first of the game on a one-time pass from Morin. At the 6:10 mark, the Terriers increased their lead to 6-3 when they took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play. After Connor Walsh's shot was tipped in front by Cameron Foggo, Dean Pratt collected the rebound and slammed in his third goal of the season. The Black Bears cut the lead to 6-5 before the end of the period on goals from Johnny Malowicz and Clark.
Six minutes into the final period, Maine scored two goals from Tulley and Conor Shea to take a 7-6 lead. With eleven minutes remaining, Nadeau sent in Hersom on a breakaway and he scored his second to tie the game at seven. In last ten minutes of the game, Maine scored four goals to finish the game at 11-7.
Small received the loss in goal for the Terriers, making 36 saves before being relieved by Dakota Gendreau who stopped five shots. Carrier earned the win in goal for Maine with 37 saves. The Black Bears outshot the Terriers, 52-44, and held a 25-24 edge in faceoffs.
The Terriers return to the ice on Sunday, November 15, when they travel to Gorham, Maine, to play Saint Joseph's College in a 6 p.m. NECHA Colonial Conference North Division matchup.
