BSB: Thomas Splits with Cazenovia for First Win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Thomas College baseball team split a doubleheader with Cazenovia College for their first win of the season on Friday.

GAME 1: Cazenovia 13, Thomas 6

The Wildcats jumped out early with three runs in the first, then added another three in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. After Cazenovia tacked on two more in the fifth, Thomas got on the board in the bottom of the inning with Antonio Cabrera (Plantation, Fla.) scoring on a groundout, followed by a Bradly Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) RBI single.

Cazenovia ran the score to 13-2, before Thomas scored four in the seventh to make it a 13-6 final.

Ryan Jurgiewich took the loss for Thomas, pitching three innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits.

GAME 2: Thomas 10, Cazenovia 5

After two scoreless innings, Thomas got in the board with two runs in the third. Kyle Gleason (Danville, N.H.) scored on a bases loaded walk, followed by a sacrifice fly by Nick Bagley (Hancock, Maine) that brought John Villanueva (Gray, Maine) in to score. Caz got one back in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1 after three.

The Terriers put three runs up in the top of the fourth to make it 5-1. Gleason hit and RBI single, followed by a Bagley double that brought two in to score. The Wildcats answered again in the home half of the inning with two runs to make it 5-3.

Thomas got their big inning in the fifth, erupting for five runs, four of which were scored on four consecutive RBI singles by Villanueva, Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine), Cabrera and Darren Kelly (Foxboro, Mass.). Shane MacNeill (Kittery, Maine) capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-3. Caz got two back in the bottom of the sixth, but Thomas moved on to the 10-5 win.

Jacob Lacroix (Berwick, Maine) earned his first collegiate win, coming in for Thomas in relief for one inning without an earned run. Dominic Esposito (Portland, Maine) had a solid start of three innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits. Smith and Kelly also logged quality innings in relief to close the game.


Thomas will face cross-town rival Colby in Auburndale, Fla. at Lake Myrtle Park on Saturday, March 23 at 2:00 PM.
