WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College baseball team fell to Castleton University, 5-2 and 13-3, of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at H. Allen Ryan Field.
Game 1: Castleton 5, Thomas 2
The Spartans capitalized on a Thomas miscue in the opening frame as Johnathan Lindau scored to take an early lead. The Terriers responded in the next inning on a Castleton error to plate Tristan Pena (Portland, Texas).
Castleton began to pull away in the third as Mitchell Caron knocked a two-run homerun. Pat Mumford followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1. The Terriers cut the lead to two in the bottom half of the frame as Pena scored again on a ground out.
The Spartans tacked on an insurance marker in the fifth as Dillon Benham brought in Caron with a RBI double.
Joe Gratton took the win on the mound for Castleton in six innings, seven hits, and two runs (one earned). Aaron Smith picked up the save with a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.
Cody Cousins (Wells, Maine) shouldered the loss for Thomas in 2.2 innings, five hits, and four runs (three earned).
Game two of the doubleheader will resume in the top of the fifth inning tomorrow with the Spartans leading 7-2. The final two games of the four-game series will take place after.
Game 2: Castleton 13, Thomas 3
The Spartans took a big 7-2 lead until the game was halted in the fifth inning due to darkness. The game continued the next day as Castleton outscored the Terriers 6-1 to finish at 13-3.
