Baseball Opens with Losses to Worcester St. and Knox

AUBURNDALE, Florida – The Thomas College baseball team opened their 2017 season in Florida with a 13-7 loss to Worcester State and a 10-2 rout at the hands of Knox.

Worcester State 13, Thomas 7

The Lancers jumped out to a huge six-run lead in the top of the first on five hits.  Adam Barry hit a single to score Jake Ryan to open the inning.  Mike Ferrara followed up with a two-RBI double take a 3-0 lead.  Worcester State tacked on three more runs in the inning on a triple from Brian Bonacquist and a single from Kenan Kolanda.

After a tough first inning, Brandon Hubbard (New Gloucester, Maine / Gray-New Gloucester) came in for relief on the mound as he silenced the Lancers' bats.  The Terriers offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth as Alex Curtis (Monmouth, Maine / Monmouth Academy) and Tristan Pena (Portland, Texas / Gregory-Portland) were both hit by pitches to put runners on.  Jaicob Flores (Kingsville, Texas / Riviera-Kaufer) followed up with a single to load the bases.  Sophomore Derek LeBlanc (Madison, Maine / Madison) sent a double down the right field line to score Pena and Curtis, putting the Terriers on the board.  Isaiah Arana (Orlando, Florida) knocked in two more runs on a single up the middle to bring the score within two.

Worcester State added seven more runs in the seventh and eighth inning to increase their lead to 13-4. Thomas added three runs in the final frame as Darren Kelly (Foxboro, Mass / Foxborough) ripped a triple to center field to score Jason Gervacio (Providence, R.I. / Paul Cuffee).  Alex Flagg (Belfast, Maine / Belfast) knocked a single to score Kelly while Arana double to score Flagg, ending the game at 13-7.

Knox 10, Thomas 2

The Terriers and Prairie Fire each pushed a run across in the opening frame.  Arana and Kyle Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine / Monmouth) started with back-to-back singles.  After stealing second and third, Arana scored on wild pitch.

Tristyn Ruiz led off for Knox, hitting a triple and eventually scoring on a wild pitch.  Later on in the bottom of the third, the Prairie Fire added two more runs on a two-RBI triple from Kobe Shutter.  Shutter came through once again in the fifth on a two-RBI double to increase the Knox lead to 6-1. 

The Terriers scored their second run in the top of the sixth as Andres Cabrera (Brooksville, Fla. / Hernando) brought in Grant Corbett (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Memorial) on a single after Corbett had tripled to get on.

Knox tacked on four more runs in the ninth to finish the scoring at 10-2.

The Terriers will be back in action for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 21 as they face Hope.
