WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas baseball team dropped a pair of games to Lyndon State Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. The Hornets powered their way to an 11-2 game one victory and came from behind for the 8-5 win in the second game.
The losses put the Terriers at 16-19 overall and a third-place in the conference with a record of 14-10. Lyndon moves into a tie for fourth-place in the conference at 9-13 while improving to 10-22 overall.
Dylan Newton went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, five RBI's and a two-run homer in the first inning to power Lyndon at the plate. Mason Brewer went the complete game, allowing just two unearned runs while striking out eight.
The Terriers used six different pitchers in the game. Sean Twohig pitched the seventh inning and struck out three batters.
Thomas scored runs in the second and seventh innings, as De Los Santos scored on a Hornet throwing error in the second and Chris Moran collected his first RBI of the season on a single that drove in Alex Curtis.
The Terriers held a 5-2 lead after five innings, but a two-run sixth followed by a four-run seventh gave the Hornets a come-from-behind 8-5 win to sweep Sunday's doubleheader and split the four weekend games with Thomas.
The bats got going early for the Terriers, sending two runs across in the first. Derek Kane and Michael De Los Santos each collected a RBI on singles.
Both teams went scoreless over the next two innings until Thomas plated a run in the fourth inning on a Lyndon error that allowed Anree Benitez to score.
The Hornets got on the board in the top of the fifth, as Andre Eason singled home a run and Kevin Tufo came in to score on a Terrier error.
Thomas would respond in the bottom half of the inning, getting the two runs right back. Nik Beeson scored one run on a throwing error by Lyndon, while Alex Curtis drove in another on a double to right center to extend the Terrier lead to 5-2.
In the top of the sixth, the Hornets pulled within one run, as Ian Macgregor and Kevin Tufo each recorded a RBI in the two-run inning.
After Dylan Newton tied the game up in the top of the seventh with a RBI single off of Nik Beeson, Reece Tanguay hit what turned into a game-winning two-run homer over the right field fence to give Lyndon the lead.
The Hornets added an extra run on a passed ball to go into the bottom of the inning up 8-5. Starter Jeff Williams closed it out for the complete game win.
Isiah Fleming started on the mound for Thomas and went 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs (three earned) with six strikeouts. Beeson took the loss, allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) with one strikeout in 1.1 innings.
Curtis and Matt Romandetti each had three-hit games and Benitez had two hits and two runs scored to lead Thomas at the plate.
The Terriers will return to the field on Tuesday, April 28 for their regular-season finale in a one-game matchup against the Saint Joseph's College Monks. Game-time is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
