ORONO, ME - Thomas held a 2-0 lead through three innings, but was unable to hold on as they fell 9-2 to the University of Maine on Wednesday night.
The Terriers (4-11) got off to a good start, as Anree Benitez drew a lead-off walk, and then stole second with one out to get into scoring position. It was the fifth stolen base of the season for Benitez. After a Derek Kane single gave Thomas runners on the corners, Nik Beeson came through with a single to center to drive in Benitez and take the early 1-0 lead.
Matt Rutherford put the Black Bears (10-17) down in order in the bottom of the first. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning.
Benitez again got things started in the top of the third, leading off with a triple to centerfield. Kane then hit a sacrifice fly to left and Benitez scored to put Thomas up 2-0.
Maine started to get their bats going in the fourth, as they struck for three runs on three hits, with Luke Morrill, Brett Chappell and Brenden Geary each recording one RBI as the Black Bears took their first lead of the game.
Scott Heath drove home a run in the bottom of fifth to pad the Maine lead to 4-2. The Black Bears struck big in the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits, and were aided by two Thomas errors.
Maine would add one more in the eighth and put down Thomas by a final of 9-2.
The Terrier offense had just five hits, but were led by Benitez, who had a triple, a walk and scored both runs on the day. Beeson had a team-high two hits and one RBI, while Kane also had one RBI.
On the mound, Rutherford went five innings, giving up four hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out two. Jordan Johnson, Peyton Kennison, Rob Casarez and Rett Adams all made appearances on the mound for Thomas.
Maine was led by Heath with three hits, two runs scored and two batted in. Jake Marks got the win on the mound for the Black Bears.
Thomas will be right back on the diamond tomorrow, Thursday, April 9 for a doubleheader against Husson University starting at 2:00 PM. Due to field conditions, the teams will play the games at Winkin Complex on the Husson campus, with Thomas being the home squad.
