Chicago Takes Two from Thomas on Final Day of Spring Trip

WINTER HAVEN, FL – Thomas College baseball was unable to crack the win column versus University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon, as the Terriers dropped both games of the doubleheader in the final two contests of their Florida Spring Trip.


Chicago erupted for three runs in the fourth inning, which resulted in becoming the winning run as the Terriers were held scoreless in the final four innings despite loading the bases on two separate occasions.

Both teams plated home two runs in the first, then the Red and Black scored three in the bottom of the second. Chicago responded with four in the third, but Thomas came back with two more in the bottom half to take a 7-6 lead.

In the fourth, Chicago scored one run on an error by the catcher on a double steal attempt, then they tacked on two more runs with a homer by Brett Huff to left field.

Rett Adams suffered the loss on the mound, tossing 3.2 innings. Isiah Fleming tossed 3.1 innings of three hit ball, holding the opponent scoreless with three strikeouts.

Anree Benitez went 3-4 in the loss, while driving in two RBI.


Thomas once again was able to get on the scoreboard early, scoring one run in the first inning on an error by the shortstop that plated in Benitez. Chicago was able to respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but the Terriers took back the lead with another run in the second.

Chicago broke the tie with two runs in the third, then extended their lead with a run in the fourth and fifth inning to take the rain shortened game 6-2.

Isiah Fleming tossed two innings in the no decision, giving up two earned runs with three strikeouts. Dylan McNally suffered the loss, going three innings, giving up one earned run with a strikeout.

Benitez continued to lead the offense for Thomas in the nightcap, going 2-3 with a run scored.

Thomas will be back on the diamond next weekend when they return to New England to kick off conference play against Lyndon State on Saturday and Sunday April 5 and 6 respectively.
