Terriers Close Out Regular Season With Sunday Sweep Over Chargers

WATERVILLE, ME- Thomas picked up a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon over Colby-Sawyer to close out the regular season, winning 2-1 in game one, and 8-2 in game two to complete the sweep.

The Terriers finish up with a record of 15-23 (13-11 NAC) while the Chargers finish at 19-17 (14-11 NAC). Thomas will finish the season in fourth place in the North Atlantic Conference and will compete in the NAC Tournament next week. The Chargers finish in third and also will be in the NAC Tournament.

In a game that saw only three runs on 11 combined hits between the two clubs, it was only fitting that the ending of game one was a walk-off hit batsman.

Senior Colby Averill (Biddeford, Maine), who had a team-high three hits in the contest, picked up a one-out single to start the bottom of the seventh, and was then pinch-ran for by freshman Nate Peasley. After Bowse relieved Charger starter Jordie Scheiner (Redding, Conn.), sophomore Tim Bradford (Richmond, Maine) singled to center.

Senior Jeff Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) then walked to load the bases for fellow senior Cody Vigue, who would unsuccessfully try to sacrifice fly the winning run home. Thomas senior Eric Sucy (Belgrade, Maine) took a pitch from Mike Bowse (Tewksbury, Mass.) off his helmet with the bases full in the bottom of the seventh to secure a Terrier victory.

Senior Jake Chamblee (South Berwick, Maine) went the full seven innings on the mound for Thomas, giving up six hits, one earned run while striking out four for his fourth win of the season.

Scheiner started for the Chargers and went 6.1 innings allowing four hits and two runs (one earned).

The second game of the doubleheader saw much more scoring action, as eight different Terrier players drove home runs in the 8-2 victory of Colby-Sawyer to pick up the sweep, and overall split the four games over the weekend.

Thomas broke a scoreless game in the game in the bottom of the third when Richardson singled home Zack Groat (West Bath, Maine).

The Terriers would strike for three more in the bottom of the fourth with RBI's from senior John Charves (Harwich, Mass.), Groat and Bradford.

The highlight of the game came in the bottom of the sixth when Vigue tripled to right-centerfield scoring Richardson all the way from first.

Sophomore Tim Locke (Waterville, Maine) picked up his fourth win of the season for the Terriers as he went six innings allowing six hits and two earned runs with one strikeout. Senior Thomas Cameron (Jackson, Maine) went the final inning notching two strikeouts.

Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.) was tagged with the loss for the Chargers as he went five innings giving up eight hits, six runs (four earned).

Thomas is set be compete in the North Atlantic Conference Tournament scheduled to begin on Friday, May 3.
