Waterville, Maine – The Thomas College baseball team dropped both games in their doubleheader against first place Castleton in North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division action Friday afternoon. The Spartans took game one 4-0 and held off the Terriers in game two winning 4-2.
Game one featured a pitchers dual as Castleton's Dakota Aker and Thomas' Danny Burke both kept the game scoreless for six innings while striking out five batters apiece. It wasn't till the top of the sixth that a runner crossed home, when Castleton's Ryan Zielinski scored an unearned run off of a Zach Mayo single. The Spartans added one more run in the top of the sixth when Macyn Clifford doubled to left field bringing in Peter Wagner for the 2-0 lead. Burke got the Terriers out of the inning when he caught Castleton's Adam Greenlese looking ending the inning. The Terriers were unable to record a run in the bottom of the sixth as they left two runners on base when Aker caught Rob Nutter looking on a full count.
In the top of the seventh Castleton got some insurance after RBI's from Zielinski and Joe Borowski gave the visitors a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh after Thomas' Thomas Cameron popped up to second, Aker finished off the home team striking out the next two batters for the complete game win.
In the nightcap the Spartans wasted no time getting on the board as an RBI from Mayo brought home the first score of the game followed by an unearned run off of a wild pitch giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Terriers made it a one run game in the bottom of the second when Nutter crossed home on a Castleton wild pitch.
The Spartans pulled together a two run inning in the top of the third making it a 4-1 game. Thomas pitcher Eric Sucy was able to gain control of the game and hold off the Spartans from adding anymore runs before giving way to Sean Twohig in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs Ben Goodall was walked bringing up Joshua Gray, who sent a double to left field bringing home Goodall and making it a two run game. Nutter was next up to bat and after getting walked the Terriers soon found the tying runs on first and second with Cameron up to bat. Cameron would send a high flyer out to centerfield but Castleton's David Brandt had not trouble making the routine catch ending the game at 4-2 Spartans.
Patrick Riley picks up the complete game win for the Spartans striking out two batters, while Sucy shoulders the loss for the home team having struck out six Spartans.
The teams will meet up again tomorrow to complete the four game series; Thomas will also honor seniors Ben Goodall, Danny Burke, Arthur Winship, Danny Donovan Jr., Bejay Perkins, Joahua Gray, Thomas Cameron, Chris Farrar, Taylor Livingston, and Rob Nutter.
