East Providence, R.I. – The Thomas College baseball team began their 2012 season Sunday afternoon with a pair of losses in a non-conference double header with the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats took game one holding the Terriers scoreless for a 4-0 win and completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
With the loss the Terriers open their season with a record of 0-2 (0-0 NEAC East), while the Wildcats improve to 5-6 on the season.
JWU struck first when senior centerfield Matt Newsome led off the game with a single to right field. He then stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a James Reyes single. Reyes came around to give the Wildcats the 2-0 first inning lead when he stole second and scored on a Brian Olofson single to right center. Reyes knocked in his second RBI of the game in the 5th inning to give JWU the 3-0 lead. Sophomore Tyler Pacheco gave the Wildcats their final run after he poked a single up the middle that scored Olofson. Thomas freshman Wes Perreault led the Terriers batters with two hits on three at bats. Senior pitcher Chris Farrar (0-1) shoulders the loss for the Terriers striking out three batters giving up two earned runs in two innings of work. Danny Burke relived Farrar in the third striking out two batters and giving up one earned run before yielding to Sean Twohig in the sixth. Aldo Moral (1-3) picked up the win for the Wildcats striking out six Terriers and giving up three hits in a complete game performance.
Newsome got things going for JWU again in the bottom of the 1st inning of game two after he reached on a hit by pitch, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Reyes single to left. Reyes scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball before Pacheco knocked his second RBI on the day to give the Wildcats the 3-0 lead. Thomas got on the board in the top of the 2nd inning after a single by Ethan Hurley scored Joshua Gray. The visiting Terriers trimmed the lead to 3-2 on an RBI double by Gray in the top of the third. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Olofson led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore Tim Printer to make the score 4-2. Gray was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Thomas while Reyes went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Wildcats. Jacob Chamblee (0-1) shoulders the loss for the Terriers pitching two innings giving up three runs. Eric Sucy relived Chamblee in the third striking out one batter before giving way to Tim Locke in the bottom of the fifth for one inning of work. Junior Tom Babb finished the game for the Terriers at the mound giving up two hits and one earned run. JWU's freshman pitcher Shawn Haugh (1-0) picked up his career win in five innings of work while Chris DePamla (Sv, 2) grabbed the save for the Wildcats.
The Terriers will head west for their next game where they will meet up with Concordia (Wis.) for a non-conference double header on Wednesday March 21st at the 2012 RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational in Arizona.
