WATERVILLE, Maine – The first annual unified basketball jamboree was held on January 20 at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium on the campus of Thomas College.
The event was conducted by members of the Thomas College Special Olympics Club; a new club started on campus in the fall of 2017.
More than eight Maine schools are participated including: Deering/Portland, Hampden Academy, Leavitt, Lewiston, Massabesic, Morse, Mt. View, Westbrook, and Winslow. Unified basketball is played by special needs students partnered with students without developmental disabilities.
Each team played two games throughout the day with the first game beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the final game starting at 3:30 p.m. Over 23 Thomas student-athletes volunteered for the event which saw over 160 participants.
Overall, $2000 was raised from the jamboree with all proceeds benefitting Special Olympics of Maine.
