WATERVILLE, Maine – Following the devastating events of Hurricane Harvey in the state of Texas, the Thomas College Athletic Department has stepped up to donate in a time of need.
The donations began on August 30 as Head Men's Basketball Coach Geoff Hensley organized the first donation box, responding to a call for help from the University of Houston Head Men's Basketball Coach Kelvin Sampson. Coach Sampson asked any and all coaches, regardless of level, high school, Division I, Division II, or Division II, to send t-shirts, shoes, or any other clothing to help support the victims.
After a week of donations from many departments throughout the Thomas community, 15 donation boxes of shirts and shoes were sent out on Wednesday, September 6 to support those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
"It is a travesty to see the devastation that was caused from Hurricane Harvey throughout the city of Houston and the state of Texas," said Coach Hensley. "Being a member of NCAA athletics, we have a duty and sense of responsibility to help those in need. We heard Coach Sampson putting out the call for help and we are doing our small part to answer his call. We hope that our donations will have a positive impact on those who suffered major losses. Coaching is such a small, close-knit profession, that it is an honor to help one another out in a time of need. We had so many members from the Thomas College community and people living in the local area who came together and donated anything and everything they could when they found out they could help the victims."
